What are the
Cockroaches

Cockroaches are insects of the order Blattodea (Blattaria). Cockroaches are hardy creatures and breed rapidly. They are one the oldest living insect. Cockroaches seek out warm places and often enter homes or business premises. There are some interesting facts about cockroaches:

Cockroaches can squeeze through the tiniest of gaps.

Cockroaches have been around since the time of dinosaurs!

A cockroach can live almost a month without food.

A cockroach can live about two weeks without water.

A cockroach can live for up to one week without its head!

Any standing water in places like bird baths, flower pots, and gutters will attract cockroaches. Compost and wood piles provide food and shelter. Trash and recycling bins provide an excellent food source. Leaf litter, dense vegetation, and mulch or pine straw provides ideal hiding places.

It may surprise you to know that cockroaches are, in fact, able to bite humans. There have been reported cases of cockroaches biting fingernails, eyelashes and calloused skin on hands or feet. Cockroaches will also eat dead skin cells. However, cases of cockroach bites are extremely rare. They are fast! cockroaches can run up to 80 centimeters per second, and can change directions 25 times per second. Roaches chew sideways and they will eat nearly anything including book bindings, glue, and even feces.

Cockroach Bite

When you get roaches in the home, cases involving cockroaches biting humans are extremely rare, but if they bite people, it can cause allergic reactions. A cockroach bite is more than an inconvenience to a person with asthma or other breathing issues.

Although cockroach bites are not dangerous to humans; however, the allergens they produce pose a problem. Often the result of allergens is a skin reaction, such as a rash that lasts for days or even triggers an asthma attack.

You might develop a skin rash or experience shortness of breath following a cockroach bite. In extreme cases, the area around the bite might become infected, causing the wound to be inflamed and filled with pus. Seek medical attention right away if this happens.

It is a misbelief and thought that a cockroach releases venom when it bites a human. Cockroach bites do not leave venom simply because cockroaches are not venomous. However, they will leave bright red side marks, and the skin can be rather itchy at the site. Although this pest is not poisonous, being bitten by one still requires you to seek medical care immediately since cockroaches are dirty insects and carriers of many forms of bacteria.
